Reflections on Hope: Day 2

The Reflection on Hope: Day 2

Introduction

Reflections on Hope is a 5-day devotion on what God has to say to you and me about how he uses our struggles to form in us perseverance, character, and a living hope anchored in the nature of God the Father, in the work of Christ on the cross and the current work of the Holy spirit in our hearts.

Day Two: Perseverance

Scripture Romans 5:3-5 (NKJV) - “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Devotion

Tribulations are the catalysts that produce perseverance. When we face difficulties, we are given the chance to build a steadfast spirit—a resilience that stands firm in the face of adversity. Perseverance is more than just enduring; it’s about thriving in the midst of trials.

Although bitterness, anger, loathness are a choice but in us who are following Christ, tribulation should produce perseverance.

In Kinyarwanda we have a process called “Guhura ibishyimbo” in which the dried beans whipped into separation from their pod. It is only after perseverance through the process that the beans are separated from the pods and made fine for human consumption.

Perseverance refines us. It teaches us to wholly lean on God’s strength when ours fails, to trust in His timing, and to keep moving forward even when the end is not in sight. It's a daily decision to keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.

Although perseverance is not an easy thing to do, turning our eyes upon Jesus and looking in his wonderful face makes our earthly trial deemed bearable. He alone can infuse in us the grace needed and he is always faithful to do so.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, grant me the perseverance to stand firm in my faith. Help me to see each trial as a step in my journey towards becoming more like You. Strengthen my resolve to trust in Your unfailing love and to keep pressing on, no matter the challenge.

Amen.
